Joe Thomas Memorial Award

The Joe Thomas Memorial Award was first given at the 1976 Poquoson High School graduation. It is the only athletic award given at graduation. The award is presented by the previous year’s recipient. The recipient receives five hundred dollar scholarship and their name is placed on a plaque in the main office and in the display in the gym lobby.

Criteria for the award:

The criterion listed below describes the type of student athlete Joe Thomas was.

  1. All senior athletes involved in VHSL co-curricular athletic programs are eligible for nomination.
  2. Any Poquoson High school varsity head coach may nominate as many worthy athletes he/she feels meet the following guidelines:
    • Senior athlete
    • Dedicated to their fellow athletes and the success of the team
    • Maintains an above average academic record
    • Maintains an above average dedication to their sport
      • on time to practice
      • does not miss practice
      • gives 100% in practice and competition
    • Shows proper respect to teachers, staff, coaches, adults, and fellow students and has not had disciplinary action.
  3. The Athletics Director will compile the list of nominations and distribute a ballot to all varsity head coaches for consideration.
